Doing, should, same, colleague, earn

Should I earn the same as same sex colleague for doing same job?

I have been in my job for a year and a half and have been on the same salary for the whole time. It has come to light that a girl who has been here for 6 months doing the same job as me earns more. Do I have the legal right to earn the same as her?

You can ask but unless you are a union employee you have no legal right to earn the same as any other employee.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but employment is not a level playing field. It depends a great deal on the company and the industry, but the basic idea is that every employee is an island unto themselves. I work with many people who have similar jobs all of whom have different salaries: the range is massive -- tens of thousands of dollars separate most people; millions separate the bottom players from the top players. A couple of my employees even earn more than I do on occasion.
